I agree with the last commenter that this is a great article. Natural headache treatments are much better. When people rely on pain killers for chronic conditions such as headaches it can lead to so many other problems. Even just taking aspirin if done for long periods of time can lead to intestinal bleeding. Finding a natural remedy should be a goal for anyone suffering from chronic headaches such as migraines or tension headaches.

I am a Chiropractor in Reno Nevada and I treat a lot of patients that suffer needlessly from headaches. I just wanted to leave a post to tell you that is refreshing to see someone else that is promoting a natural solution for headaches, since most headaches have a mechanical cause. I would have to agree that the majority of people with headaches could be helped by addressing the mechanical causes such as muscle tension, joint alignment and posture. Great article.

Hi Jason,

Thanks for your comment.

I actually couldn't disagree more when you say that 'most headaches are associated with loss of the normal cervical lordosis'. If you saying you think headache sufferers are actually helped by carrying more tension in their neck and shoulders I am shocked. For literally hundreds of patients I have seen major reductions in the frequency and severity of migraines, tension headaches and mixed migraine/tension headaches simply by eliminating the muscle tension in the face, jaw, neck and shoulders. (This was with measuring the muscle activity directly with surface EMG).

The point of the article is not to say that T'ai Chi will do anything for headaches per se, it was illustrating that headache sufferers can benefit by creating new patterns of muscular behavior similar to what occurs during sports training and I used T'ai Chi as a sports example.

That is not to say that the relaxed coordinated movements of T'ai Chi or even Yoga would not be beneficial for headaches but my experience is that neither T'ai Chi training nor Yoga training is directly targeted on the mechanisms which create tension in the jaw, face, head and neck. So it is best to focus on retraining the specific muscles involved in headaches, the tightness of which acts to directly cause tension headaches or serve as a trigger for migraines.

Interesting. However, most headaches are associated with loss of the normal cervical lordosis. This requires increased muscle tension as a neck with reduced curvature supports the cranium less efficiently and thus increased muscle tension is required. It is not possible to increase a cervical curve with T’ai Chi.

I was unable to verify that this post is authentic. My email to him was returned as undeliverable and are very concerned that the information we present on this blog is authentic.

While we have a great deal of sympathy for the not unusual situation he describes, years of ongoing failed treatments for severe daily headaches, we are passionate about getting the information out that there is a non-drug, non-surgical approach that is successful in stopping even severe daily headaches. We are not saying that this nerve decompression surgery does not have the potential to work but we do feel strongly that everyone should have the choice to try a non-drug, no-risk approach before they get so desperate that they will try more invasive and potentially dangerous options.

my wife suffered from migraines for years.. no stop daily headaches. you name it, it was tried: nerve blocks, biofeedback, freezes, physical therapy, massage therapy, etc. nothing worked till we tried decompression surgery. finally some relief. surgery took place oct 08 and it's been three months. she is not headache free but continually improving as she recovers from the surgery. we would do it again. it's the only thing that worked...
